At commencement, you have an additional opportunity to highlight your global experience as you craft your story and prepare for the next stage of your journey. Select high-impact learning experiences beyond the classroom qualify students for one or more Experiential Learning Pins. Your education abroad experience will likely make you eligible for the Study Abroad pin.
How to Qualify for the Pin
There are several key requirements for the Study Abroad pin:
- A portion or all of any qualifying program must take place outside the USA;
- Students must receive academic credit on their UC Merced academic record for the program, whether UC or transfer credit;
- Students must have completed the program prior to applying for the pin, though exceptions will be considered for programs in progress at the time of application with sufficient documentation; and
- Students must participate in their study abroad programs while UC Merced students, or on an International Opportunities Program Leave for the purpose of study abroad, but not as students at a previous transfer institution.
With the exception of UCEAP participants, you will be expected to provide documentation of your qualifying study abroad experience through the Experiential Learning Recognition Request Form; you may wish to collect and organize such documentation prior to starting the form.
How to Apply for the Pin
In mid- to late spring semester, as commencement approaches, students are invited to participate in various opportunities to participate in commencement and related activities. While the UC Merced Study Abroad office will often pre-vet known study abroad participants, we encourage you to use the Experiential Learning Recognition Request Form to request all applicable pins and verify your eligibility.
Other Pin Qualifications
If your study abroad opportunity had a built-in internship or research opportunity, be sure to apply for the Internship or Research pin, respectively. Students may use the same Experiential Learning Recognition Request Form.
