Apply for the Gilman Scholarship to Study Abroad

Application now open for programs starting summer or fall 2020

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, due March 3, is an undergraduate grant program for U.S. citizens of limited financial means to enable them to study abroad, thereby internationalizing their outlook and better preparing them to thrive in the global economy. The program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students, who are receiving a Federal Pell Grant, to study or intern abroad. Studying abroad during your undergraduate career can be a life-changing experience. Additionally, receiving a Gilman Scholarship and studying abroad can support your efforts in being a more competitive candidate for jobs, other scholarships and admission to graduate programs.

DAAD RISE Germany Apps Open Now!

Apply by Dec 15 for a €750 Stipend for STEM Research in Germany Next Summer

Your major is in Natural Sciences or Engineering? You’d like to do an internship in Germany? Great! Check out application requirements.

Through Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) Germany, students are carefully matched with doctoral students and researchers (from universities of applied sciences), whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. Interns receive a monthly stipend to cover everyday costs.

*German language is not required and the working language will be English.

Apply for your USA Passport on campus for the first time!

By now, you may have completed the first four passport steps (#1 acquire proof of citizenship, #2 order gov't-issued ID, #3 fill out passport app, #4 take passport photos), and you are now ready to move on to the next stage: gathering your passport app materials and payment. Here's your checklist:

1. Passport application form
2. Evidence of citizenship
3. Photocopy of evidence of citizenship
4. Photo ID
5. Photocopy of photo ID
6. Passport photo
7. Passport fees (calculate or chart)

At this point, hopefully, you've completed the first three passport steps (#1 acquire proof of citizenship, #2 order gov't-issued ID, #3, fill out passport app), and you are now ready to move on to the next stage: passport photos.

How to get passport photos? Here are some options:

2. Go to a photo center or photo studio or pharmacy with photo services. You can expect to pay anywhere from $6 at a place like Costco to $15 for a pair.
3. Enlist a friend to help.

Apply for your USA Passport on campus for the first time!

Once you've gathered or ordered your proof of USA citizenship, you need to be sure to have government-issued photo identification, typically a driver's license or California ID. If you don't have gov't photo ID, it's time to apply.

If you already have gov't-issued photo ID, fantastic! You're ready to move on to step 3: the passport application itself.

Finding or acquiring proof of USA citizenship is often the passport application stage that takes longest. Typical documents to prove citizenship:

1. Birth certificate
2. Naturalization certificate
3. Consular report of birth abroad

If you have this requirement taken care of, congratulations! You may then proceed to the next stage: ensuring you have gov't-issued ID.

Apply for the Gilman Scholarship to Study Abroad

Application now open for programs starting spring or summer 2018

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, due March 5, is an undergraduate grant program for U.S. citizens of limited financial means to enable them to study abroad, thereby internationalizing their outlook and better preparing them to thrive in the global economy. The program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students, who are receiving a Federal Pell Grant, to study or intern abroad. Studying abroad during your undergraduate career can be a life-changing experience. Additionally, receiving a Gilman Scholarship and studying abroad can support your efforts in being a more competitive candidate for jobs, other scholarships and admission to graduate programs. Breathe Easy in These Study Abroad Cities

Here are some hot spots with better air quality than Merced today

While some cities around the world have notoriously bad air quality, there are several that have better air quality than Merced has experienced lately. Check out these cities with coursework in English:

1. London had notoriously horrible air in the midst of the Industrial Revolution but today enjoys air in the good to moderate range.
2. Seoul, along with much of Japan, can claim better air than much of mainland Asia's major cities with good to moderate air quality.
3. Rome's air quality today falls in the good to moderate range.
4. Cave Hill, Barbados, is in the middle of the Caribbean, meaning it pretty much constantly has good quality air.
5. Industrious Berlin is not only one of the most bikeable cities in the world, it enjoys good air despite sitting in a basin like Merced.

Do you have a passport? Has it expired? Will it be valid through your study abroad program? Are you ready to assemble a #PicturePerfectPassport? Passports are required for all study abroad programs. You will need the application, the fee, proof of citizenship, and two passport photos. As of 2017, you can now apply in Merced!
