The Scholarship Ambassador Program is intended for students that have applied and received either the Gilman A. Benjamin Scholarship, the Freeman-Asia Scholarship, or the UCEAP Duttenhaver Scholarship. Students must apply to the program in order to receive service certification for the Gilman or Freeman-Asia Scholarships.

Selected students will be notified by email and invited to attend the Scholarship Ambassador Welcome Reception & Information Meeting.
- Scholarship Ambassadors will advise students about the statement of purpose and service project proposals for their awarded scholarship. This may include but is not limited to giving general tips, helping students create outlines for their essays, reviewing essay drafts and giving feedback, and helping students develop service project proposals.
- Scholarship Ambassadors will be required to schedule at least 5-one hour drop-in advising sessions at the begining of their first term back to UC Merced. Drop-in advising will be held in the International Affairs Office in KL-101 during office hours. Hours are Monday-Thursday, 9-4 pm and Friday, 9-2 pm.
- Scholarship Ambassadors will be in charge of advertising their own drop-in advising hours. Advertising can be done through print, social media, in person promotion, or a combination of the three. Whatever works.
- Scholarship Ambassadors will be responsible for creating a handout, video, webinar or some other tangible item for students to use for self-help in the scholarship application process.
- Project examples: tips sheet, essay builder worksheet, service project proposal worksheet, online workshop, or promotional video.
At the end of each advising session, Scholarship Ambassadors should make a copy of their sign-in sheet for their study abroad advisor. The advisor will be required to certify the completion of the service project and the sign-in sheets will be used for this reason.
