Q: Initially, what made you decide to study abroad? Why did you choose your program?

A: I wanted to experience what Singapore had to offer, especially academically. I was excited to study at a prestigious university with political science courses that genuinely interested me and aligned with my goals. Being able to learn in such a global and diverse setting made the experience feel especially meaningful to me.

Q: What was the highlight of your study abroad experience?

A: I learned so much about international studies during this experience, which was especially important as I was in the process of narrowing down my career path. Discovering how much I genuinely enjoyed international relations and being able to learn and engage with my peers only strengthened my passion for the field.

Q: What was your greatest challenge abroad and how did you overcome it?

A: My greatest challenge was adjusting to being away from home. I had never lived outside the country on my own, and while I expected it to be manageable, it was more difficult than I anticipated. Pushing myself to connect with others and step outside my comfort zone was intimidating at first, but doing so led to meaningful relationships that I am truly grateful for.

Q: How did your coursework abroad compare to your courses at UC Merced?

A: The lecture and course style was a lot more rigoruous and comepetivetive than UC Merced. While lectures were not mandatory, I felt as if I would fall incredible behind if I didn't attend as opposed to Merced. There was also a lot more essays that I need to write with more requirements and I did have to spend a lot of time studying material for the exams.

Q: What did you gain from your study abroad experience?

A: I learned what it truly means to live independently and start from scratch. Through this experience, I grew more confident in connecting with others, strengthened my academic habits, navigated new places on my own, and gained a deeper understanding of myself and my capabilities.

Q: What advice do you have for students considering study abroad?

A: I know many students feel intimidated by the idea of living alone in another country, but I truly believe that embracing change and new experiences is essential for personal growth and self-discovery. With the many resources available at both UC Merced and the host university, students are well supported and can truly thrive during their study abroad experience.

Q: What do you wish you learned about studying abroad before you left for your program?

A:  I wish I had better understood the work and study culture in Singapore before arriving. The level of dedication and competitiveness initially caught me off guard, but it ultimately pushed me to adopt a more driven mindset, one that I know will be essential as I work toward my future goals.

Q: Describe a typical day abroad.

A: My days usually started around 8 a.m. with a morning routine and breakfast before heading to class. In between lectures, I would study or work on assignments, often in the central library or the study pods near my dorm, which quickly became my favorite spots. After returning home to rest or eat dinner, I would spend the evening studying a bit more and then unwind with friends late at night.

Q: If you could go anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you go and why?

A: I would love to go to Brazil. It’s a place I’ve always wanted to visit, and as my undergraduate journey comes to an end, spending time relaxing on a Brazilian beach sounds perfect. I’m also deeply drawn to the culture and music, and I know it would be an unforgettable experience.
