Q: Initially, what made you decide to study abroad? Why did you choose your program?

A: I wanted to see the world and grow as a person. I feel like I needed to find what I was capable of and truly be on my own. I had never traveled outside of the state, so having the opportunity to go abroad and live there for 4-5 months was something unheard of for my family and it was something that I did not want to miss. As a first-generation low-income student this opportunity seemed unreal and I wanted to break that ice so that my siblings could have the same opportunities! I chose the University College Utrecht because I wanted to challenge myself. It was an honors college and it was a program that nobody on campus had previously done. I wanted to be out of my comfort zone by not knowing anyone or having zero expectations of what to expect. UCU is also an international school so I wanted to meet people with different backgrounds!

Q: What was the highlight of your study abroad experience?

A: The highlight of my study abroad trip would have to be making so many international friends! We got to go around school, Utrecht, the Netherlands, and even out of the country together! I did not expect to form bonds with anyone in such a short amount of time, but I am blessed that I did!

Q: What was your greatest challenge abroad and how did you overcome it?

A: II was in an accident before classes began. I was struggling to adapt to my walking limitations at the same time as adjusting to my new environment. This came with internal and external hardships. I had the support from the UCEAP office as well as the students at UCU! By making sure I was included despite my limitations, they made me feel part of the campus life!

Q: How did your coursework abroad compare to your courses at UC Merced?

A: My coursework abroad didn't come close to my coursework at UCM. I had never struggled so much with my academics. It was 10x harder and I personally did not feel academically prepared. UCU provided me with a tutor (a professor that was like my academic advisor) and she was extremely helpful! I was able to adapt academically and really enjoyed my classes!

Q: What did you gain from your study abroad experience?

A: I feel like I gained a new family and a new perspective of the world and myself. I gained perseverance and I would go as far as saying I found myself. This experience has impacted my life tremendously and I know that I have opened this opportunity for my siblings!

Q: What advice do you have for students considering study abroad?

A: I would recommend doing more research on your host university and host city. I personally loved Utrecht, but UCU was extremely challenging! I’m glad I ended up at UCU and would recommend it 110%, but it’s important to know what you are getting yourself into! Learn the difference between an honors program and an honors school!

Q: Describe a typical day for you abroad.

A:A typical day abroad for me consisted of me waking up and having breakfast with my unit mates and then going to class or to study at this cafe place called 30 MLS. Then walking across the canals and back to campus. Cooking with my roommate for dinner and studying in Voltaire (a campus hall) with my intro week family!
