Q: Initially, what made you decide to study abroad? Why did you choose your program?
A: I pursued studies abroad to immerse myself in a new culture and gain diverse perspectives, particularly in public health. The unique coursework offered insights distinct from what's taught at home, broadening my understanding and skill set. I chose the program UCEAP for my study abroad because it's known for preparing students to succeed in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world, which is a key component of my educational goals.
Q: What was the highlight of your study abroad experience?
A: The highlight of my study abroad experience at Korea University was forming lasting friendships with both professors and students. I gained invaluable skills and knowledge during my stay in Korea, which also fostered my independence and ability to navigate the world on my own.
Q: What was your greatest challenge abroad and how did you overcome it?
A: Navigating a new country on my own was my greatest challenge abroad. The language barrier, cultural differences, and unique customs were initially daunting. However, by embracing confidence and pushing myself to engage with the environment and people, I adapted and overcame these obstacles. With the support of friends, I learned to thrive in my newfound independence without feeling alone.
Q: How did your coursework abroad compare to your courses at UC Merced?
A: My courses abroad at Korea University differed from those at UC Merced, featuring extended three-hour lectures without discussions or regular coursework. Instead of assignments, the focus was on absorbing lecture material and performing well on midterms and finals, which were the sole determinants of our grades. This contrasts with UC Merced's approach, where ongoing assignments and discussions throughout the semester aid in understanding and retention.
Q: What did you gain from your study abroad experience?
A: During my study abroad experience, I gained so much! I made new friendships with people from different cultural backgrounds, which was amazing. I also learned valuable information about public health in the country I was in, which gave me a fresh perspective. It was fascinating to compare their healthcare system to ours back home. Besides knowledge, I developed new skills like leadership, confidence, teamwork, and adaptability. This experience helped me grow personally, understanding myself better and discovering my likes and dislikes. It was truly an enriching journey!
Q: What advice do you have for students considering study abroad?
A: If you're considering studying abroad, my advice is simple: just go for it! It's a chance to step out of your comfort zone, grow personally, and gain invaluable knowledge and skills. It's an adventure that can become one of your most treasured university memories. Even if it's a bit scary, it's totally worth it. You'll learn so much about yourself and the world. I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat!
Q: Describe a typical day abroad.
A: A typical day for me abroad was all about soaking up the rich history and culture of South Korea. Every day, I would venture out and dive into new experiences, whether it was trying delicious food, exploring different areas, or discovering new stores. Not only was I learning something new from my classes, but I also had the opportunity to get to know my professors on a personal level. Learning from their expertise, advice, and engaging in conversations with them was truly rewarding. And of course, making new friendships with my professors was an added bonus. It was all about going out, being curious, and embracing the opportunity to learn something new every day!
Q: If you could go anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you go and why?
A: If I could choose any destination to visit tomorrow, it would be Japan. My time in South Korea was incredibly enriching, offering me a deep dive into their culture and public health system. However, I missed the opportunity to experience Japan during my stay. I'm eager to understand Japan's approach to public health, their global perspective, and to immerse myself in their history and culture, much like I did in South Korea. This journey would no doubt add to my educational and personal growth.
