Study Abroad Student Panel Bios:

- Alexis Jolivette studied in Paris, France, for Winter quarter 2020 in the UCEAP Social Justice and Activism program.

This was my first time leaving the U.S. so I was a bit nervous, but as a first-generation student I was excited to expand my education and grow as an individual overseas. One aspect I enjoyed most was navigating daily life in a foreign country, which sparked an interest in traveling to new places more in the future. I hope sharing my experience will encourage peers to pursue an international education as well.""""

- Ayodele Abdul-Hadi is an Environmental Studies major with a concentration in global environmental justice who studied abroad during Winter 2020 in the UCEAP Exploring Andalucia program.

Ultimately my experience studying abroad taught me to be more confident. I also really learned to appreciate the friendships I made with the other students from the program. Friendships were especially important when the COVID-19 pandemic developed as we really supported each other in getting through that whole experience. I would 100% suggest studying abroad to anyone thinking about it. Even though I was nervous to stay in a country where not that many people shared my same identities, I didn’t let that hold me back. I really believe that with the right resources and support, study abroad can be a truly life-changing experience.

- Chelsey Boykin studied Intensive Psychology and participated in the UCEAP University of West Indies program in Barbados during Spring 2019.

My experience studying away truly taught me how to be more open-minded and welcoming to things I might not initially understand. I learned a lot by hearing Caribbean students share their lived experiences. I was able to see that some things are not made for an outsider to understand and that this is okay. Being abroad has taught me that I can do anything I want to do. If I can move to another country and immerse myself in a new culture, the possibilities are endless. I am no longer scared of change and feeling out of place.

- Tolu Familoni studied Robotics Engineering and participated in the UCEAP Social Justice and Activism program during Winter 2020.

Studying abroad as a Black woman was definitely an interesting experience and I think it's because of the fact that I didn't see or hear of many Black people studying abroad that I felt like it just wasn't something accommodating or accepting of me. And I really had to get over most of these thoughts so that when I got there I could make the most of the experience and not stand in my own way because of my insecurities and also make sure I was forging a path for other people of color and other Black people.

Study Abroad and Social Identities

Within the context of dual pandemics of COVID-19 and racial injustice, fostering spaces of inclusion and belonging has never been more important - both at home and abroad.

Experiences abroad can be different; some aspects of your identity can shape your experience and contribute to your interactions and perceptions of the culture, language, politics, society. In this session, we’ll share real stories and strategies for all students to promote safe and supportive environments abroad.

UC San Diego Global Seminars 2021

UC San Diego Global Seminars are high-impact programs designed to give students a deeper understanding of the course content through experiential learning.

These five-week long summer study abroad or study away experiences are led by a UCSD professor and are open to undergraduates from any campus. Students enroll in a package of two courses for a total of eight UCSD quarter units. Class sizes are intentionally kept small to create opportunities for one-on-one interaction with some of the best faculty at UCSD, and each program contains site visits that give students a deeper understanding of the course content. This year we are offering new domestic, hybrid, and virtual options for the first time to make sure that these educational opportunities remain accessible despite potential restrictions on international travel. To learn more, watch our video, find out about specific programs and our rolling application process on the Global Seminars website, or Zoom into our drop-in advising hours to meet us on Friday.
