Which are the top five study abroad programs over 2021-22? You might be surprised by one or two on this list.
Coming up, we want to show you the top study abroad countries of 2021-22. And in August, we anticipate releasing the study abroad deadlines for 2023-24 programs.
#1: UCEAP – Korea: Yonsei Univ.
Seoul is a fashion and technology trendsetter with traditional roots showcased in its temples, shrines, and palaces. At Yonsei University, immerse yourself in the South Korean lifestyle. Take a class on Korean history, study Korean pop culture, experience the comedy of Nanta, a wordless cooking performance, and learn about K-drama. You can pursue classes in any major and, if you have a soft spot for East Asian culture, you’ll find this program especially rewarding.
#2: UCEAP – Italy: Psychology & Cognitive Science, Padua
Put psychology theory into practice at the University of Padua and explore the depth and range of your major. Courses focused in psychology and cognitive science include practical, hands-on work as well as experimental activities. A vibrant college town just east of Venice, Padua features student-filled piazzas and an abundance of cultural, musical, and sporting events. To help you fully experience living as an Italian, you will be assigned a local student buddy.
#3: UCEAP – United Kingdom: English Universities
This program is a full immersion experience, which means you’ll be treated like any other British student. Craft your full-time course schedule based on your academic needs just like back home. Attend class with local Brits and international students from all over the world who choose to study abroad in England.
#4 (tie): UCEAP – Spain: Univ. of Barcelona
As an educational destination, Barcelona is a marvel, filled with diversity in its culture, architecture, art, economy, and gastronomy. The capital of Catalonia, a region with its own flavor, identity, language, and culture, is home to Catalans, who speak both Catalans and Castilian Spanish.
#4 (tie): UCEAP – Italy: Communication Studies in Rome
Refine your communication and public relations skills as you immerse in all the best things about Italy—art, food, and the people! This program will give you the basic Italian skills you need to explore it all, and if you're new to international travel it's the perfect way to introduce yourself. It's sister program, Sociology in Rome, looks to make the 2022-23 list.
Why These?
It's never possible to know precisely why certain programs or countries rise to the top, but here are some of our guesses:
- Korea has been a top-3 study abroad destination for years. With fewer programs in Korea in 2021-22, more of those students ended up concentrated those options.
- Psychology is Merced's second largest major, making Padua an appealing destination. Fall 2021 was a tough calendar fit for UC Merced, which means we will likely only see spring and academic year options moving forward.
- The UK and Italy also land in the top-3 student abroad destinations annually, while Spain is a perenial favorite.
