Whether with a specific focus on sustainability or with special opportunities to focus on sustainabilty through elective coursework, these are ten excellent programs with opportunities for all students interested in sustainability:

  1. Australia — Marine Biology & Terrestrial Ecology, Univ. of Queensland
Participate in innovative research in the diverse marine ecosystems of Queensland. This program will take you from the bio-rich Australian rainforest around Lamington National Park to nesting turtles at Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef. Study marine biology and human and terrestrial ecology with fellow UC students in courses designed with labs, extensive fieldwork, and hands-on research.
  2. Australia & the Solomon Islands — Pacific Island Environmental & Community Health (Multi-Site)
This multi-site program immerses you in the magnificent wilderness and Pacific Island culture of the Solomon Islands. After studying at the University of Queensland and the Solomon Islands National University (SINU), you will move to the Western Province, where you will learn environmental survey techniques to study public health and sustainability in remote communities. The program culminates with a capstone research project and final presentation.
  3. Chile — Socio-Ecological Sustainability in Southern Chile
Planning for sustainable development and ecological conservation are approached from several perspectives including those of indigenous people, the lumber industry, regular townsfolk, and tourism promoters. In addition to the forested, lakeside campus, students travel to several national parks to work on their projects.
  4. Costa Rica — Tropical Biology & Conservation, Monteverde Institute (Semester)
Explore the flora and fauna of Monteverde, one of the richest wildlife sanctuaries in the tropics. Extensive field trips and captivating lectures in the forest illustrate key biological concepts, and dedicated instructors will help you build your skills as a scientist as you conduct your own research project. Other highlights include a week-long backpacking trip, two weeks of camping, and a brief homestay.
  5. Denmark — Univ. of Copenhagen
Denmark is a global leader in the use of renewable energy, advanced technologies, and creation of a sustainable society. Enjoy small class sizes within this large, research-based university, and access many opportunities to participate in research projects in your major. You may take first year graduate level courses for upper-division credit provided you have the appropriate background.
  6. Germany — Engineering for Sustainability, Munich Univ. of Applied Sciences
Take project based engineering courses that include lab experiments and simulations and visits to global companies headquartered in Munich.
  7. Israel — Ben-Gurion Univ. of the Negev
BGU, a world leader in sustainability research, offers the Sustainable Development and Environment Track, with a required research seminar and field study, plus other related courses. Study the ecological, economic, social, cultural, demographic, and political aspects of sustainable development in the Middle East.
  8. New Zealand — Sustainability: Sciences, Landscape Architecture & Environmental Management
Explore stunning New Zealand while you study topics such as agroecology, GIS mapping, biodiversity, and resource assessment, among many others. Renowned for excellence in environmental and resource studies, Lincoln University provides courses firmly anchored in the needs and issues of the real world. You will take courses in either the Sciences or Environmental Management & Planning fields.
  9. Singapore — Biodiversity, National Univ. of Singapore
A highlight of this summer program is the Field Studies in Biodiversity course, which introduces species-rich habitats and offers a weeklong field trip to Pulau Tioman, a tropical island in the East China Sea. Here you will conduct research in unique ecosystems such as rainforests, freshwater streams, mangroves and coral reefs under the guidance of experienced field biologists. The National University of Singapore, a top-ranked, innovative university with notable strengths in the biological and marine sciences, has conducted research on this Malaysian island for nearly 40 years. Study of a local language (Beginning Chinese or Beginning Bahasa Indonesian) and the culture of Singapore complement your understanding of this multicultural city and its communities.
  10. The School for Field Studies
Through the collection of ecological and social data, students and faculty contribute to sustainable responses that make sense within the local context. Local impacts, global challenges—research critical environmental issues around the world
