Q: Initially, what made you decide to study abroad? Why did you choose your program?
A: I wanted to explore and learn about a new culture that I didn't know much about. I wanted a change in environment and to expand my cultural awareness. This program was right in the heart of Italy and it was a perfect place to get to know more about the Italian culture because there is so much to do!
Q: What was the highlight of your study abroad experience?
A: The highlight of my study abroad experience was able to see the true Italian beauty. I was able to integrate myself socially and be able to get a true genuine taste of life as an Italian. Being able to see all the beautiful churches and museums, the food was more than I could imagine. You could not walk down a street without being fascinated by art and beauty of Rome.
Q: What was your greatest challenge abroad and how did you overcome it?
A: My biggest challenge was learning the language and trying to become as fluent as I could since it was essential to know some Italian to get around anywhere or do anything. My Italian classes really helped me with that and I felt more confident in my Italian.
Q: How did your coursework abroad compare to your courses at UC Merced?
A: It was for the most part similar to lectures at UC Merced, however since we do go on site visits for most of the classes it is imperative to be able to take good notes by listening from the professor. They don't really have powerpoint with notes it's more of a visual reference to pictures of art or important people.
Q: What did you gain from your study abroad experience?
A: I gained knowledge and understanding of the traditions and behaviors of Italian people. I was able to learn about their history that they cherish so dearly. I also learned about their traditions and food.
Q: What advice do you have for students considering study abroad?
A: My best advice is to do as much research as you can about the place you are considering on going to and not just about where the most beautiful places to visit but how they socialize, certain behaviors, transportation, famous dishes, etc. The more you know about the country the more you can get out of that experience.
Q: Describe a typical day for you abroad.
A: I would wake up early in the morning shower and get ready for class, take the tram and then walk to the UCEAP Center. I would have Italian class in the morning then I would go to work at the library, afterwards I would go to my next class. Around 4 I left the Center and headed home meanwhile passing a main market and lots of little shops. I would get on the tram or the bus, whichever came first then go home. Later we would begin preparing for dinner with my roommates and after dinner we would do our homework then go to sleep. This would be a regular day for me without going to any site visits or cultural tours which are a part of classes.
