In May 2022, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program announced the latest round of awards, and UC Merced has eight new Gilman Scholars! These scholars are among UC Merced's most successful applicants.
We are pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of State has awarded eight UC Merced undergraduates with Gilman Scholarships. Our Gilman Scholars will study or intern in 5 different countries through April 2023. These Gilman Scholars received awards of $4,000-5,000 and a combined $35,000, and they are heading to Israel, Italy, South Korea, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
The Gilman Program aims to broaden "U.S. participation in study abroad, while emphasizing countries and regions where fewer Americans traditionally study." The program supports UC Merced's student population in making study abroad possible for students from a greater variety of backgrounds while reducing debt burdens associated with college.
In fall 2021, UC Merced was recognized as a top-producing institution of Gilman Scholars.
The Gilman Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and is supported in its implementation by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
