Q: Initially, what made you decide to study abroad? Why did you choose your program?

A: I decide to travel abroad to see a new country and experience a different culture. As a first-generation student traveling or even seeing a new country seemed out of reach for me, and I knew my opportunity was now or never. It was a difficult decision to make at first, but I knew taking the first step would open the doors to future opportunities.

Q: What was the highlight of your study abroad experience?

A: The highlight of my experience abroad was traveling to 11 new countries and seeing something new every time.

Q: What was your greatest challenge abroad and how did you overcome it?

A: The greatest challenge was the long-distance from home. Although the distance was far and the hour difference made it more difficult, being around new people helped me overcome homesickness. Making new friends and seeing new places made me realized what I had in front of me and knew it was a matter of days when I would be returning home.

Q: How did your coursework abroad compare to your courses at UC Merced?

A: I felt the coursework to be heavier, although it was easier to complete. The reason I say it was heavier was that I was taking courses I had not been exposed to at UC Merced. Although I was assigned many assignments, I learned a lot from my professors abroad.

Q: What did you gain from your study abroad experience?

A: I gained confidence in myself and in the decisions I now take. Before departing, I felt secure in my comfort zone and felt a sense of happiness in my bubble, and once I stepped out, it was the most uncomfortable feeling. While feeling uncomfortable, I was growing a thicker skin that is now the confidence I carry.

Q: What advice do you have for students considering study abroad?

A: If I could give a piece of advice to a student who is considering studying abroad, I would tell them to take the opportunity now. It's the scariest decision, but its one of the most rewarding experiences and also the best decision one can take, especially as an undergrad.

Q: Describe a typical day for you abroad.

A: A typical day consisted of attending class from 9 am to 6 pm every Monday through Thursday. After class, I would take the train back home and cook dinner for me and study right after for any upcoming exams or finish my homework. During school days, I tried to keep more of a relaxing day. On some Thursday through Sundays, I had trips planned, or I would make day trips to nearby cities.
