Prior to Departure

  1. Research your options
  2. Make sure the program is accredited or issues transcripts through an accredited institution
  3. Check the application deadlines
UC Merced has filing deadlines in addition to individual program deadlines:
    • March 15 for all summer-start programs
    • June 1 for all fall-start programs
    • October 15 for all spring-start programs
  4. Check funding availability
  5. File IOP forms with the International Programs Center
  6. Update your emergency contact information through the UC Merced Portal
  7. See a list of countries for which the U.S. Department of State has listed travel warnings to see if the country to which you are applying is included among them
  8. Submit an application to the program provider

Upon Return

  1. Request official transcripts to be sent directly to the International Programs Center
    • Transcripts must be issued by an accredited institution
    • Transcripts must arrive sealed
  2. Submit course substitutions to the appropriate academic advisor for your major

Selecting IOP

Students who do not find a program that matches their needs in EAP may seek opportunities through programs offered outside of UC through accredited institutions. Students should remember that in addition to finding coursework through an accredited program, coursework must be similar to coursework available at the University of California. Students who choose to pursue IOP should realize that UC Merced staff will not be experts in these options and that UC Merced policy and infrastructure for working with these programs may still be in flux.
