Study Abroad Programs

Choosing a study abroad program may be challenging with a multitude of options available. Here are some criteria to consider before selecting a program type:

  • Academic coursework available
  • GPA and language requirements
  • Program cost and available financial aid
  • Summer vs. semester vs. yearlong options
  • Language
  • Location

Below is a summary of the three categories of study abroad programs available to UC Merced students.

The UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) is the official system-wide study abroad program for the University of California. UC Merced students are encouraged to explore EAP first because of a balance of academics, cost, convenience, service, reputation, program variety, and local expertise. We encourage students who cannot find EAP options that meet their needs to explore the alternative options below. Apply here!

UC Summer Abroad (UCSA) programs are options available through many of the UC campuses available to UC Merced students, and take place primarily in the summer. There are dozens of options every summer among the campuses that offer programs. Apply here!

International Opportunities Programs (IOP) includes study abroad program providers outside of the University of California. Students must participate in programs provided through accredited academic institutions in order to receive academic credit at UC Merced or to use any federal or state financial aid. Apply here!

Legends of China (LOC) – The Silk Road to the Future is a UC-affiliated program to China (and now South Korea) not for academic credit over the summer. Apply here!
